Sec. Granholm: Support dam breaching for orca and salmon

Salmon and orca are on the brink of extinction. But in 2022, many NW elected officials and agencies in the Biden administration have stepped up in support of the largest salmon restoration opportunity in the country: breaching the four lower Snake River dams.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) plays a key role in managing these dams, and we need their support in creating a future with clean, renewable energy and abundant salmon. Ask Sec. Granholm, the head of the DOE, to support breaching these dams.

Dear Secretary Granholm,

Thank you for your engagement on salmon restoration in the Northwest. Salmon, and the orca that depend on them, are on the brink of extinction. The greatest opportunity we have to prevent extinction and restore abundance is to remove the four lower Snake River dams. And, we can do this while modernizing our energy system in the Northwest.

As you know, the Biden administration has made a bold commitment to develop "a durable long-term strategy to restore salmon and other native fish populations to healthy and abundant levels," and the recent National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) report has identified dam removal as an urgently needed "centerpiece action" for salmon and steelhead restoration. Sen. Murray and Gov. Inslee concluded their months-long process with a report that outlined how the energy services provided by the dams could be replaced with clean energy alternatives, and recommended breaching the dams as the best option to restore salmon.

We need your leadership to ensure that Washington can transition to a clean energy future without the harmful lower Snake River dams. Please support breaching the four lower Snake River dams.
