Tell Sen. Cantwell: Save our orcas

We have a historic opportunity to save salmon and orcas with the comprehensive report being developed by Gov. Inslee and U.S. Sen. Patty Murray to replace the services of the lower Snake River dams. If we breach the four lower Snake River dams, we would have the chance to save threatened Pacific Northwest salmon and recover the critically endangered Southern Resident orcas.

Gov. Inslee and Sen. Murray need to know their colleagues support dam breaching to save orcas and salmon -- and Sen. Cantwell's support is key.

Dear Senator Cantwell,

In 2018, the world watched as a grieving orca mother carried her dead calf for 17 days. They were members of one of the Southern Resident orca pods that make their home in the Puget Sound -- and scientists warn that this iconic Pacific Northwest species will not survive unless we take bold action.

Southern Resident orcas are starving because they don't have enough fish to eat. Only 74 Southern Residents remain today, which is among the lowest in decades. To save the orcas, we need to save their food source -- Chinook salmon. In fact, wild salmon populations have dropped by 90% since the construction of the Lower Snake River dams. The most effective thing we can do to restore salmon populations is to remove the four Lower Snake River dams.

Thank you for encouraging salmon recovery in Washington by securing billions of dollars in the Infrastructure package. We need salmon advocates like you in Congress.

Governor Inslee and Senator Murray are releasing their comprehensive plan at the end of July this year that could include dam replacement services, but if we want it to be successful, it needs to include dam breaching. I encourage you to support dam breaching and a comprehensive plan toward saving salmon, and in turn, orcas.

This is the kind of bold action we need to save these beautiful, majestic whales.
