Tell your state representative: Put wildlife over waste

Plastic pollution is a growing problem as millions of tons of plastic enter our rivers, lakes, and oceans, threatening our wildlife. The Washington legislature has the chance to pass SB 5022, a comprehensive bill concerning the management of certain materials to support recycling and waste and litter reduction.

This bill would ban polystyrene, encourage a market for recyclables and reduce single-use plastics.

I encourage you to vote "yes" and support the Plastics and Recycling Bill, SB 5022. As your constituent, I am deeply concerned for our wildlife and we can't wait another year to take action. This bill would not only address our recycling crisis in Washington, but also would help curb future plastic pollution.

Expanded polystyrene is one of the worst offenders of single-use plastics because it breaks down into microplastics that are easily ingested by wildlife. Polystyrene foam is not easily recyclable, and it can persist in the environment for centuries until it fully breaks down. SB 5022 would ban foam food service ware, keeping our waters cleaner, and our wildlife safer.

We must reduce the production and use of single-use plastic, including expanded polystyrene and foodware, and shift to reusable alternatives for the betterment of our environment, public health, and local economies.

It's time for a state-wide solution to end our plastic crisis, and it starts with your vote. Please vote "yes" to SB 5022.
