Your Letter:

I urge you to protect our kids by strengthening and passing HB 1139 to address the dangers of lead in school drinking water.

Lead is a potent neurotoxin that's especially dangerous for kids. It can negatively affect learning, growth, and IQ. Any level in our schools is unacceptable and unsafe, and we know that this issue is widespread in Washington. Washington should require that all taps are tested in Washington schools; establish a 5 ppb standard for remediating lead-laden fixtures; and have systems in place to alert parents, communities, and school personnel when lead is discovered in their school.

This is an investment in our kids' health. Funding is available from the Department of Health and the Healthy Kids, Healthy Schools grant program to fully cover testing and remediation costs for school districts across the state. There are measures in the bill that provide that the schedule of remediation is contingent on state and/or federal funding. Schools have little to lose from this bill passing as is. Kids have a lot to lose if we don't pass this bill, or pass a weakened version of the bill you heard in public hearing on Monday.
