Tell your state senator: Put wildlife over waste

Plastic pollution is a growing problem as millions of tons of plastic enter our rivers, lakes, and oceans threatening our wildlife. The Washington legislature has the chance to pass a Plastics and Recycling Bill, SB5022, which would improve recycling and curb plastic pollution.

This bill would ban polystyrene, encourage a market for recyclables and reduce single-use plastics.

I encourage you to vote "yes" and support the Plastics and Recycling Bill, SB5022. As your constituent, I am deeply concerned for our wildlife and we can't wait another year to take action. This bill would not only address our recycling crisis in Washington, but also would help curb future plastic pollution.

Expanded polystyrene is one of the worst offenders of single-use plastics because it breaks down into microplastics that are easily ingested by wildlife. SB5022 would ban foam food service ware, keeping our waters cleaner, and our wildlife safer.

SB5022 would further reduce plastic pollution by requiring food businesses to provide single-use utensils, straws, beverage cup lids, and condiment packaging only by request. This is an easy solution for customers to waste less, and food businesses to save on costs.

We must reduce the production and use of single-use plastic, including expanded polystyrene and foodware, and shift to reusable alternatives for the betterment of our environment, public health, and local economies.

It's time for a state-wide solution to end our plastic crisis, and it starts with your vote. Please vote "yes" to SB5022.
