Save Our Orcas

The population of Southern Resident orcas, a species of whales that lives off the West Coast, has dwindled to about 70 whales. A lack of Chinook salmon -- their food source -- is a primary factor in their decline. If we don't act now, our orcas could go extinct. That's why we're calling on our elected officials to develop a comprehensive plan to restore salmon and save our orcas.

Our Southern Resident orcas need your help. With only about 70 Southern Resident orcas left, the population faces extinction. Four dams along the lower Snake River in southeast Washington State are driving Chinook salmon, a major food source for these orcas, toward extinction. To save our orcas, we need to restore their food source.

Federal agencies recently recommended a plan that, if implemented, will fail to rebuild salmon populations and, consequently, does not do enough to protect our orcas from extinction. Now, we need to go back to the drawing board. We need to create a comprehensive, regionally-driven process, led by a team of stakeholders, that develops the solutions we need to restore an abundant salmon population and saves our orcas.

I ask you to be a leader and bring people across the Northwest together around an urgent and comprehensive solution that restores the lower Snake River and its endangered salmon populations and allows our orca populations to thrive.
